How can I share a modem over a network?

I can't find any info in the Win 95 sources about how to share a modem over a network.

I would like to be able to browse the internet from my room while the modem is at the front desk computer. I run 5 Pcs on a network using the Win 95 networking software.

Any ideas appreciated.

You will need a proxy server. Microsoft has one, and there many others. We use Wingate.

You might find the following link useful. http://www.windows95.com/howto/lansing.html If you want more advice get back to me.

Get iShare from Artisoft ,allows up to 32 computers to share an intenet account simultaneouly over the win 95 network ,. Works brilliantly and stable .Go to Harris technology website or Artisoft for more info . Cost around $250 ,

You can't do it except by using a third party software. The best one I have come across is called Wingate which you can get from http://www.deerfield.com

If you just use it to run one computer sharing the modem on another the program is free! In your case you will need to purchase a copy to run up to 4 additional computers but the price is very reasonable.

Setting it up is reasonably easy but read the instructions carefully. Any problems contact me and I will see what I can do to help.

Dear Richard

I sympathise. I run Macs and the solution I found was VICOM. It is fantastic through one phone line all 3 hard drives can access the net download E-mail ect. It needs someone who knows what they are doing to set it up and equally a net provider who appreciates the complexity of connection requirements. It took me 2 years, a change of internet provider but I am now very happy. VICOM I think is for the Mac but do a search on VICOM GATEWAY and they may do software for PC's, even better upgrade to MAC OS 8 and enjoy the power of the Mac. It is not as easy as it should be no simple solution exists so be Patient I WASN'T !!!!

Richard, I have Macs and there are several solutions available, so I can't believe that there isn't something for Windows. The type of software you want is called an Internet Gateway. Vicom Communications produces two for Macs--SurfDoubler (cheap, 2 or 3 machines only) and Vicom Internet Gateway (expensive, lots of machines).

They may do a windows version, but if not, search the internet for "internet gateway software" and see what comes up!
