A tutor of mine told about his first experiences as a GP - in Ireland.

My first position while training in Family Medicine was as an assistant in a small town in County Cork. And my first patient on my first morning was Mrs Houlahan, who complained of wind.

'Doctor, its the wind. I'm full of wind. My tummy swells, my body rumbles. Oh, and the noise. To be sure, I can't go out no more. You must help me.'

For 20 minutes she described the long history of the wind inside her, and the devastating affect it had on her, her husband, her children, the neighbours and the dog.

I was quite flummoxed, and now running late. However, I remembered my recent training in preventative medicine and took her blood pressure, examined her quickly, and jollied her out the door with a repeat appointment to allow me to make a plan of attack.

I was very proud when at lunchtime the next day I overheard Mrs H talking to a neighbour in the local shop.

"That new doctor, now there's a great man. I told him about m'wind, and straight away he knew what to do, and me suffering all these years. He placed a bandage around my arm and tightened it ever so much, and sure enough as it let go I could hear the wind rushing straight out of me, and I haven't had a trouble since."
