About MedAu

Last Modified 4/10/96

Professor Wren's hormonal treatment regime for dysfunctional uterine bleeding is:

On the third day after the patient starts her period, start 5mg norethisterone daily for one month.

In the second month, reduce this to 2.5mg daily and add oestradiol.

In the third month, reduce norethisterone to 1.25 mg daily and maintain this dose with the oestrogen.

Most women will have no further bleeding, but the regime can be modified for individual needs.

When I first started to menstrate I was only 11 years old,I am now 38. I always had heavy irregular bleeding cramping, clotting. At one stage I bleed for 2 years every day as if I had a tap between my legs. It cost me so much running back and forward to the Doctors. I tried different pills, Deprovera, Male hormones everything. I have three children all boys 16, 14 & 8 now. I have had endometrious, ovarian cysts the size of mellons blleding I could not understand where it could all come from. I have now had a hystorectomy about 6 years ago mainly to prevent the bleeding but that didnt stop the adhesions from 22 surgeries. Eventually my ovaries had to be removed I am on HRT patches now and gaining weight. At 5ft tall I cannot afford to get too fat and the doctor says thats something to get used to I think there has to be more than this. I am alergic to codiene, asprin, panadol and panadiene, morphine, elastroplast and vibramicine. Pretty good when you need to take pain relief.
Any ideas what I can do???

On the third day of my period I woke up due to very heavy blood flow. When I went to the bathroom a fairly large 'jellylike' clot of blood came out of me. More appeared on the toilet paper. Following that my period seemed to be over. What could this be?

irregular periods

Last Wednesday after having sex with my boyfriend, I started to bleed. I didn't think much of it because my periods have always been a little irregular(every 3 to 5 weeks)and it had been about 3 weeks since my last one. My periods usually last 5 or 6 days and are never really heavy. This time however it was very heavy with a lot of clotting. It lasted for 6 days and I thought I was done, but earlier today I started again. It is lighter and no clotting so far, but I was just wondering if this is normal. I am 27 years old and I have only been sexually active for about a month...would having sex have anything to do with this?

I am 25 years old. For the past 6 months now i have been having irregular periods. usually right before my period starts i will start spotting this brownish colored blood. sometimes after intercourse i will bleed for a couple of days then it goes away. this month my period has lasted over 7 days days i'm going on 2 weeks now. i have never had a period thats lasted so long. its not heavy bleeding or any blood clots. i have gone a few months with my period starting when its supposed to but now my period is so screwed up i never seem to know when its going to 'really' start. do you think hormone pills would make my periods regular? any information you can give me would be great. i am scared and would like to know what i can do.

bleeding during and after sex

Sarah James, jvahlee@hotmail.com

I lost my virginity to my fiance about a year ago. I never have had any problems since recently - maybe it's because we have been having sex alot more lately (He's in the Marines and just returned home). Anyways, we had sex the last day of my period - or what I thought was the last day (I usually only bleed for 4-5 days during the menestratal flow). My bleeding grew heavier and I have had my period lightly now for 8 days. What's wrong? Last night I not only bled after sex (like I have been lately) but I was bleeding during sex. It was so bad that there was blood stains all over the sheets. This doesn't seem normal. My bleeding still hasn't stopped since last night. What's wrong with me - I'm so scared.

I am newly married and newly on the pill again. The last week in Nov. I was sick & missed 3 pills on my last week of pills, so following the directions, I skipped the inactive pills & started a new pack. The problem is that I started a period on November 30th and it has lasted all this time. I called my GYN nurse after 2 weeks of bleeding through, she said it was normal. I called her again on the fourth week & told her it was only getting heavier. She had me switch to a heavier dose pill & the blleding finally slowed to a stop this week. Now my problem is that I start bleeding after sex with my husband. Each time the bleeding is heavier. I'm really scared about this as it's never happened to me before. Please answer if this is normal or if it could be serious. Thank you.

It went away and now days bewfore my period it is back again (Iam on my last pill before my period starts). I've never really had this before. I also get a sore 'underarm' about one week before my period just on one side, no lumps or bumps. Are these things normal? I am29 years old and have always had normal periods lastin 3-4days. I am 20 years old. I got off birth control in December of 2000. Since then my periods have been a little later than usual, which my doctor says is normal. My last period was around May 20. I spotted a couple of days before then, stopped, then had a normal period. The past week I've had a brownish bleeding. It is not time for my period. It mainly occurs after inercourse, and during intercourse I have a small pain in my lower right abdomen. I'm assuming that it is my ovaries but Im not certain. The brown discharge is usually just when I wipe, and is sometimes in my underwear. My last pap was in April and everything was fine then. Could you please give me some advice.

Thanks,

I am 28, my son is 8. I had my tubes tied 4 years ago and they found endometreosis. I have a history of bleeding months on end. They put me in menopause and I didn't come out for 1 year after shots stopped. Then I didn't stop bleeding til my doctor would give me a shot to stop it then after a couple months he'd give me pills to start me again. Several cycles of this til he died. Found new doctor. I had polyps and he removed them and did an DNC and endometrial ablation in Aug of 99. In Feb of this year I started bleeding and I haven't stopped yet. It has gotten worse in the last few days. I can't walk without passing a blood clot. He keeps giving me provera and that doesn't help. Can you give me any ideas? Is it time for a hysterectomy?

I have been bleeding for over 3 months, in the last month it has become extremely heavy and VERY painful. This is the second time this has happened, last time was about 3 years ago, where I had a DNC and was told I had PCOS.

I would like to know why I am bleeding, but I would like to take something for the pain as it prevents me from doing normal everyday activities. I am alergic to codiene which rules out quite a few painkillers.

I am 52 years of age. I had not had a period for 69 days. Started on July 1 and it has now been 23 days. Lots of clotting and very heavy flow. Saw doctor and he started me on prometrium therapy. Heavy flow and clots continue. Ultra Sound revealed thickening of lining and tumor at top of uterus. Doctor plans to do hysteroscopy. He wants me to have local and be awake. Do you think I would do better if I was asleep. He plans to remove tumor and use electronic roller ball. Please advise.

The shot made me so sick and we decided not to have any more kids so my husband had a vasectomy. I did not get anymore shots. I started bleeding about the time I was supposed to get the next shot and it lasted for 2 months. Then I went for 3 months with nothing and back to bleeding for 2 months. Nothing seems to help I tried the pill but no luck! Help!

It is now over 2 months after the D & C and I am experiencing breakthrough bleeding after being on BC therapy for 2 weeks because of abnormal bleeding. Is it unusual to have abnormal bleeding like this AFTER a D & C? I am 40 yrs. old and REALLY want to have one more child so that my son will ahve a sibling. How likely is it that I will be able to?

I was having trouble with bleeding/brown coloured mucus between cycles(occured mid cycle) whilst on the pill. The pill was changed by my doctor several times with no result. I then went off the pill and used the billings method of ovulation for six months which was ok but a bit difficult. I found that before menstruation, I had spotting, brownish mucus (which was constant ie continued without going away) for a period of six days before and then menstruation for approx 3 - 4days. I then went back to my doctor who sent me to have pathology test and I also had an internal ultrasound. These both came back with clear results. I am yet to go back for a pap smeer, but the last one I had about six months ago was clear.
Now I am taking minulet for the first cycle and have been experiencing the same discharge for a period of seven days since my last menstruation. Any suggestions??? I am 27

This last menstral cycle has been unusual for me. I started (or at least I thought I was starting) on the 12th of May. There was a slight bloody discharge that lasted for a day and then quit. Three days later I started again, with a little heavier flow that lasted a little longer. ( I usually flow for 3 days, stop for a day and then go for a last day - I flowed for 5 straight days this month) I thought I was finished last Saturday. Today I discovered that I am having a thick brownish colored discharge with a little bit of blood in it. Is this just a very unusual period or is there something that I should be concerned about. I am not in any pain, and other than having some diarehha I feel fine. I am 32.

I am having extreamly heavy bleeding for about 2 days and then light bleeding, however i have been bleeding for over a month without stopping. I had this once before an had hormone therapy and that helped. I was diagnosed with Displacia and had surgery for that several years ago. I am concerned that with all the heavy bleeding that I could become anemic, of pass out. I have felt slightly dizzy at times. I am very over weight and I am 40 years old. I would like to know if there is anything I can do to stop this. Any advice would be appriciated.

About a week after my last period was finished i had bleeding for about 4 days. It was very very little but enough that it was noticable. it was dark brown in color and semi incased in mucas. it went away after about 4 days. now my period is 2 weeks late. this isnt the first time i've been so late with my period but it is the first time i'm so late after having bleeding inbetween. i've had inbetween bleeding before but it only lasted a day and my period came 2 weeks later. i'm wondering what's up with this odd bleeding and being so late? I know i'm not pregnant!!! Is this normal?

about 2 years after my son was born I starting having irregular cycles. I would spot about 14 days after my period stopped but wouldn't ovulate for another 5 days or so. My cycles got longer and longer until they got to be about 42 days. Then I finally got pregnant again and now, after nursing a year my cycles have begone. My first one was completely normal but now my last 2 have had the spotting mid cycle (day 14) again and are getting a little bit longer (32 days). To me it seems I'm having delayed ovulation for some reason. My doctor had said it was because I was thin and that my body was burning up my estrogen but that doesn't make sense since I'm not any thinner than I ever was and am at a normal weight for my build. Are there any other possibilities??????

I am 28 and I have been on birth control for approximately 3 years (orthotricyclen). For the past year, I have been spotting between cycles, but this last month, I started bleeding about 15 days after my last period and have not stopped. I have been bleeding sometimes heavy, sometimes spotting for 8 days now (mostly when I use the bathroom). I should be starting my regular period in about 5 days. I have felt a little weak and have been cramping on and off. I saw my doctor who decided not to do an exam- since I had had a clear pap approximately 5 months ago- and he changed my pill. I am still a little concerned about the bleeding and the cramping. The bleeding seems to be worse after my husband and I have sex (but there is no pain or discomfort). Do you have any suggestions?

I have been on the pill for 2 years now. I started out with Meliane but had problems with intermenstrual bleedings and my gynaecologist prescribed Minulet for me. I had some bleedings inbetween the periods for the first months, but the last month I did not have any bleedings. The other night I had intercourse and when doing so I had some bleedings. I have had this before, but very rarely. It seems quite odd to me. I have not forgotten to take my pill at all this month, but am still worried that something might be wrong. I am wondering if I need to be afraid that I am pregnant? I know it might seem a bit odd, but I am simply paranoid. I went to my local nurse and asked her, and she said that there was nothing to worry about since I have been taking my pills regularly. Please advise, I am 21 years old.

hello.

if anyone can help me i would be truely greatful. i have been on the pill for 3 months now, and on the last month have been spotting. i had forgotten to take the pill on serveral occatiooons but took them as soon as i remembered. i went to see my doctor about this situatioon and he adivsed me that the problem was that there were imbalances in hormones since i had been taking them at different times. he also said that given time it should return back to normal...but HOW LONG??? i am also very worried that i might be pregnant as during that time i had intercooouse. al i really want to know is, if i am bleeding due to imbalances orf hormones and that now i have been tkaing the pill excatly on time for the past 4 days, when should i stop bleeding???

i hope that it is soon, as i have planned a trip away with my boyfriend in a months time and hope that the bleeding has stopped, and if not is ther a way to stop it???

if anyone can help me....please email me!!!

I have been on birth control for 3 almost 4 years now and started bleeding real heavy in the middle of my cycle. About a year ago I was told I have endometreosis (not sure on spelling), I am not sure what it is exactly. Anyways, A week after my period I started spotting bright red blood and that would happen every not and then for two weeks. Then a week ago I got up and I had started bleeding really heavily. There were large blood clots, but no cramping. This bleeding is heavier then my normal period. I went to the hospital and they said it was nothing and it would eventually stop. It had slowed down a lot, but then this morning I went to the restroom and I was bleeding heavily again. I know I am not pregnant because they gave me a blood pregnancy test and I didn't miscarry either. Do you know what it could be? Is it the endometreosis?

Since January of this year, I have had unbearable pains, enough to prevent me from walking, have to crawl. I find that about a week after my period, I begin bleeding, not a whole lot, just enough for me to get some on my pants, along with some stomach pain. I had been diagnosed with a pelvic inflamatory disease, not sexually transmitted, but they had found fluid in my pelvic area, am now being treated with what they are guessing to be endometriosis. I feel bloated all the time, am also taking iron pills due to anemia. They put me on birth control pills. They also said that I have more bacteria growth in my vaginal area than normal so I am also taking amoxcillin. In early January, I had these pains and went to the ER. They could not figure out what the pain could be so they diagnosed me with an inflammed gallbladder, even though my pains were in the lower part, not even near the gallbladder. I feel I have been givin the run around lately. I am 25 years old and really w

I have been tested for a thryoid and hormone imbalance but they come back fine. I have had a pap smear, internal-external ultrasound to see if there are any tumors, uterine biopsey and all have came back fine. I am over weight by about 50 pounds. I am 48 years of age and have been having menstrual irregularities for approx. 1.5 years. I have been having periods lasting 14 to 22 days at times. Alternatively I may not have a menstrual cycle for 3 - 5 months. My FSH and TSH are both within normal limits. I have just finished progesterone therapy. Yuck!! I am having sonography done soon and a endometrial biopsy has been recommended. I am undecided as to whether I will have the biopsy done. All I have spoken with indicate this is an extremely uncomfortable procedure. Are there any alternatives? or more comfortable testing procedures.

Since my 4th child was born nearly 6 years ago I have been having extremely irregular periods...before this my cycle was very regular at 28-30days...I have a period sometimes 14 days from the start of the last one and occasionally 25 days apart average seems to be about 19-20 days apart..they last about 5-7 days..if I'm stressed my period will come immediately or within an hour or two whether I've just had a period or not. My stomach bloats a lot and I get a low dragging/cramping pain in my abdomen which causes me to double over. Also when I ovulate I get similar pains and bloating...Ovulation takes place about 2-3 days after my period has finished.
I'm hoping someone can help me with this.....I'm getting desperate....my doctor recommended a hysterectomy after a D/C proved to be clear. I'd really don't want to have this done. I'm 34 years of age.

I have had irregular periods all my life. I have to beautiful children 6 and 4. I was able to become pregnant but since their births, my periods have become very irregular. I bleed anywhere from 2 to 5 months at a time. I am so tired of my doctors not seeing me through this problem. I have become so anemic at times that the doctors were seriously considering blood transfusions. Two years ago I became pregnant with our third child, she was to be my only girl, she died of brittle bone disease of the third stage. After this I explained the importance to my doctor that I wanted to get pregnant as soon as possible. No luck and no help from my doctor. I have been checked for my thyroid, came back normal. I am 26 and about 50 pounds overweight. Is there any help for me? Any suggestions as to what is truly wrong with me and why I bleed so long and heavy? Will I ever be able to become pregnant again?

I have been trying to get pregnant again for a full year to no avail. In the past 4 months my periods have changed. Prior to the 4 months my period came around day 24 of my cycle but every month after that it has moved up. In May I started on the day 32 in June the same in July the day 37 and August the day 35. After my period ended on August 26, which was a Saturday. I did have sexual intercourse like I usually do the next day I started spotting a brownish bloody discharge when I urinate. What is my problem I really want to have a child and at this point when I am late I start thinking that I am pregnant and then I come on my period. Can you give me a solution I need help.

However, As of yet, Feb 22, I still have not seen my cycle. I have had all of the symptoms I normally get right before my period comes. Could I be pregnant? Or, because my cycle came five days early last month, could it be it is scheduled to come five days late?

The color is not the deep red like normal, and appears to be thicker and darker. I am very concerned about what could be going on.

My period came one week early. A few days after it stopped, I started spotting.

My Doctor has given me Medroxyprogesterone Acet.

I am also coming back next week for a biopsy which he says is standard for a woman my age.......(37).

He has assured me that it is only a 'very small' chance that it is cancer.

Back in January I had some spotting as well, and nothing was found to be abnormal at that time either.

I am 54 yrs old and I have fibroid tumors in my uterus. I am still bleeding and the Dr is treating me with depo shots every 2 weeks to control the bleeding. He does not want to do surgery because he thinks I will be in menopause any moment. I have been having this problem since last summer. I am very frustrated.
My Dr put me on birth control pills for awhile but I cannot take them I get very bad headaches. I am noticing I am getting headaches with the depo shots to. What is going on. If I am getting periods then why am I getting shots to control bleeding. When women who use depo for birth control get their shots every 3 to 6 mo?
Are these shots safe?
