To play the long bunker shot you must consider three points:
- How close your ball is in relation to the lip or the edge of the bunker.
- You must consider the height of the lip .
- The distance the ball will travel.
After considering these points, if you donít feel confident that you can get the ball onto the green from the bunker, make sure you get the ball out of the bunker and within reach of the green with your next shot.
The worst thing you can do is leave your ball in the bunker by being too adventurous.
If however, you feel that you can get the ball onto the green, here are three points which can help.
- When taking your stance in the bunker, wriggle your feet about in the sand and then re - take your stance. This helps you to achieve comfortable and secure footing.
- Try to pick the ball cleanly out of the sand. I find it is better to catch the ball slightly thin than slightly fat ( assuming your ball is not too close to the lip of the bunker ). I find it useful to feel that my upper body is rising half an inch during the downswing. This aids in picking the ball cleanly from the sand.
- If possible ( due to the proximity of the lip ), allow an extra club. Picking the ball cleanly will decrease the distance your ball will travel.
