Z plasty principle is one of the most versatile concepts in plastic surgery. It's application is mainly in scar revision. It is designed to accomplish three things:

  • - change direction of scar
  • - interrupt scar line (break tension lines)
  • - lenghten scar (overcome contraction)

Proper planning is essential. Classic description is a central limb and two peripheral limbs in the shape of a Z All three limbs are identical in length, the angle is 60 degrees. It is only possible if there is loose skin at right angles to the scar.
