Criteria for the provision of free diphtheria, tetanus and acellular pertussis vaccine (DTPa)

The combined diphtheria, tetanus and acellular pertussis vaccine (DTPa) is only provided free of charge to immunisation service providers for:

  • a) all children for the booster doses on the routine National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) childhood immunisation schedule, ie. at 18 months and 4 to 5 years of age; and
  • b) children who have experienced a moderate adverse reaction during primary course of Triple Antigen vaccination.
Moderate adverse reactions, which indicate a change from Triple Antigen to DTPa are:
  • hypotonic hyporesponsive episode (HHE);

  • a convulsion within 72 hours of immunisation, with or without fever;
  • temperature greater than 39 degrees Celsius;

  • irritability or drowsiness for more than 24 hours;

  • severe local reaction such as swelling and erythema of whole circumference of leg.
