|
POLICY: Management of chest pain may be undertaken by registered nurses. STANDARDS: - Patients admitted to Coronary Care Unit. - All patients to be monitored and rhythm strips to be recorded fourth hourly. - Patients to have intravenous access unless otherwise ordered by medical officer. - All events must be recorded chronologically in progress notes. - Medications charted; date and time. - Serial ECG's attended. - Serial cardiac enzymes attended. PROCEDURES: - Oxygen 6-8 litres administered via hudson mask. - A physical assessment to be carried out. (Physical assessment should include time of onset, intensity i.e. pain score out of 10). - Observations including BP and pulse. - If pain persists and systolic BP 100, administer SL arginine and repeat dose up to 3 times in 10 minutes. - If pain still persists, contact RMO for review and possible IV nitrate therapy. - Attend ECG. - Bloods taken for CE's, UEC's and FBC. OUTCOMES: Pain free status in patient. |
