STANDARDS:
* Maintenance of the ICU/CCU bed areas is to be attended by all Registered Nurses
on a shift-by-shift basis.
* Each bed space is to have functioning wall oxygen and suction equipment
at all times.
* Each bed is fitted with a "C" cell O2 cylinder (more than one-quarter full) filled
to a Twin-O-Vac regulator, with O2 equipment (hudson mask, oxygen tubing) and
suction equipment (suction tubing, Yankeur sucker, y-suction catheters).
* CCU beds 1-5 - a stackerbox in each room is to be stocked as follows (see sheet
1A).
* ICU beds 6-9 are to be stocked as follows (see sheet 2a, 3a).
* Full re-stocking at the bed space is required after patient discharge or transfer.
Terminal cleaning of the bed space is to be attended as per protocol.
* Each bed space is to be kept tidy and clean as per infection control policy.
* Unused equipment is to be cleaned and returned to the appropriate storeroom.
* Sharps containers are to be replaced before overfilling occurs.
* Patient's belongings may be kept in a plastic bag under the bed or in the sailboard/lockers.
Excess patient baggage should be taken home by next-of-kin.
* Patient valuables are to be stored in the Hospital safe as per valuables protocol,
or at the patient's risk at the bedside.
* Completed observation charts and other documentation is to be filed in the patient's
notes as appropriate.
* Nurses are able to provide nursing care to patients in an uncluttered, safe working
environment with necessary equipment and documentation at hand.

BASIC EQUIPMENT ON COLUMN
* Laerdal Resuscitator with Green oxygen tubing attached, and mask ready to use but
enclosed in a plastic bag to indicate it is clean. PEEP valve. (Even if there has
been a patient in a particular bed bay if the resuscitator is in a plastic bag it
will be considered clean).
* Stethoscope for use with each individual patient, stethoscopes should not be taken
from patient to patient.
* Manual sphygmomanometer with cuff attached.
* Suction equipment, ie cannister and liner with 350cms and 2 metre tubing not unwrapped
(tubing left unwrapped to alert other staff that: (a) it is not connected and (b)
it is still clean.
* Unopened Yankeur sucker.
* 2 oxygen flow meters, 1 air flow meter and 1 patient call bell.
* Syringe and forceps
* Black dwell cath.
* 1 high flow O2 meter.
